2022 Low Buy Year: Week 2 Recap

It’s been a challenging week of temptation for purchases. Mostly because of all the stocktake sales going on at the moment. Both Myer and David Jones are having extra 20% off sales on top of already discounted items. I almost got caught up and nearly hit the button on a few purchases, but luckily ran it past my sisters, who gave their honest opinion about the pieces and brought me back in line.

I’m glad I was able to be talked out of my impulse buys for the week after almost convincing myself I needed those new Sass & Bide shirts (at almost 60-70% off!), or that staple jersey dress from Country Road that would just go so well into my capsule-wardrobe-in-the-making (sure, but the goal right now is to downsize and to rediscover my existing wardrobe). My brain is very very good at making the appropriate excuses to justify and convince myself…..if I let it!

I’ve been mainly enticed by clothes this round, although I understand more than anyone that I really don’t need new clothes at the moment. Not only will I not fit into them right now (being heavily pregnant and all), but also my promise to myself to avoid fast fashion and start buying clothing made from luxury textiles (cashmere, linen, etc) that are classic pieces to last for decades.

It is incredibly hard to resist the temptation of new and shiny things. We’ve been brainwashed and bombarded with consumerism since our childhood with the promise of better things, more fun, more enjoyment, a better you, a better life, status, style, confidence…..if we just kept buying and seeking out the next BBD (Bigger, Better Deal).

That is a really hard mentality to shake and everywhere we look, things are designed to trip us up.

So, here’s to staying strong on my resolve for a low buy year, to continuously check myself (and my no-buy lists), and to ensure my money is well spent!
